Encryption with the use of 7-zip is optional and for your personal use. Cobleskill employees are not required to use 7-zip as the coby encrypt feature used on emails serve this purpose, but if you would like to add an extra layer of security for your documents in emails feel free to use this service.

1. Google search for "7zip" or use the following link https://www.7-zip.org

2. Download either 19.00 or 21.02 and select either 64 or 32-bit depending on your version of windows

  • you can check this by searching for "this PC" on the search bar on the bottom left of your screen next to the windows icon
  • under "best match" a computer icon should appear labeled "This PC", right click it and select "properties"

  • in the window that appears look under "system" and next to "system type" you will see the bit type listed there.

3. Right click the file in question, look for "7-Zip"

4. click on "add to archive"

5. on the window that appears look for "Encryption"

6. enter a password for the file and click ok.

7. once you have encrypted the file you will get an additional document titled the name of the original document with .7z extension

8. That .7z file that was just created is the encrypted one and should be the one sent via email.

Now you should be able to email that document to whomever you have deemed to be a trusted recipient
