Taking a Screenshot on Windows
Windows offers several ways to capture your screen, depending on your needs.
1. Full-Screen Screenshot (Whole Screen)
2. Screenshot of the Active Window
- Press
Alt + PrtScn
to capture only the active window.
- To save the screenshot:
- Open an image editor (e.g., Paint) and press
Ctrl + V
to paste the screenshot.
- Save the file.
3. Selective Screenshot (Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch)

Open Snipping Tool (Windows 10) or Snip & Sketch (Windows 11):
- Windows 10: Search for "Snipping Tool" in the Start Menu.
- Windows 11: Search for "Snip & Sketch" in the Start Menu.

Once open, click New to capture a custom area of your screen.

After taking the screenshot, you can edit it and save it as a file.
4. Keyboard Shortcut for Quick Screenshot (Windows 10/11)
- Press
Windows Key + Shift + S
.
- This will open Snip & Sketch in screenshot mode. Drag to select the area you want to capture.
- The screenshot will be copied to your clipboard. Open an image editor to paste and save it.
Taking a Screenshot on Mac
Mac computers also provide several ways to take screenshots with simple keyboard shortcuts.
1. Full-Screen Screenshot
- Press
Command (⌘) + Shift + 3
.
- The screenshot will be automatically saved to your desktop as a file named "Screenshot" with the date and time.
2. Screenshot of a Selected Area
- Press
Command (⌘) + Shift + 4
.
- Your cursor will change to a crosshair. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.
- Release the mouse button to take the screenshot. It will be saved on your desktop.
3. Screenshot of a Specific Window
- Press
Command (⌘) + Shift + 4
, then press the Spacebar.
- Your cursor will change to a camera icon. Click on the window you want to capture.
- The screenshot will be saved to your desktop.
4. Screenshot to Clipboard
- Press
Command (⌘) + Control + Shift + 3
for a full-screen screenshot to the clipboard.
- Press
Command (⌘) + Control + Shift + 4
for a selected area screenshot to the clipboard.
- After taking the screenshot, you can paste it directly into an app (e.g., Word, email) by pressing
Command (⌘) + V
.
Tips:
- For Windows: Use Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch for more editing options, like annotations.
- For Mac: The default screenshot saves directly to the desktop, but you can change the location by using the Screenshot app (found in Applications > Utilities).
